Proximate composition and heavy metal content of Pleurotus tuberregium mushroom grown on different substrates in (Aba) Nigeria

Mushrooms have been widely used as food and supplements in Nigeria other countries of the world for millennia. They are highly nutritious so they contain good quality carbohydrates, proteins, vitamins minerals. This study determined proximate, effects some substrates (best medium) on yield heavy metal content mushrooms Pleurotus tuberregium (Fr.) Sing., grown laboratory. Four different were experiment to grow namely: topsoil, sawdust, riversand, mixture riversand sawdust respectively. The fruit body produced was measured with use ruler vernier calipers. Some metals (Cd, Cr Pb) analyzed using Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer. parameters were: number fruiting bodies, height stipe, fresh weight, diameter pileus stipe. result production mushroom revealed that substrate had highest mean stipe height, widest significantly (p<0.05) yield. Nutritional it found crude fiber substrate; carbohydrate percentage ash topsoil substrate. contents Cd, Pb all below detection limit instrumentation substrates. From this study, choice growth human industrial should be considered enhance prevent exposure contaminants.
